Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able to understand simple, standard German expressions and phrases and deal with basic everyday situations (pre-intermediate level: A2 lower according to the CEFR). They will also be able to produce simple short texts on common topics. Students will be familiar with elementary grammar points, including conjugations of basic verbs, present and past tenses, modal verbs, word order, personal and possessive pronouns in different cases, question words, plural, basic and ordinal numerals, imperative and adverbs in comparative. Furthermore, students will be able to form clauses with several conjunctions and they will know some reflexive verbs as well. Students will be able to actively use their vocabulary to talk about the most common topics.

Prerequisites

Students should be familiar with grammar and vocabulary taught in the courses BYN1 a BYN12.
Grammar: conjugation of verbs to be, to have and other basic verbs, separable prefixes, personal and possessive pronouns, word order in a sentence, negation, definite and indefinite article, plural, numbers, time expressions, modal verbs, local and temporal prepositions, past tense ("Perfekt"), conjugation of the verb "werden", possessive and demonstrative pronouns in dative and accusative, ordinal numerals, adverbs - comparatives, imperative and past tense of auxiliary verbs

Vocabulary: meeting others, introducing yourself, family, food and drink, living in a house or a flat, my day, free time, learning, jobs, asking for directions, travelling - hotels, timetables, body parts and health, clothes and shopping, holidays

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Grammar and vocabulary is practised in an interactive way with emphasis on conversation. Furthermore, the lessons focus on the development of students' communication and listening skills - for this purpose, interactive audiovisual technologies, LMS Moodle and SmartBoard are used.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To be able to get their credits, students need to attend classes regularly (max. 3 missed classes/semester)and actively participate in the lessons.

1st week - preposition weil, past tense (Perfekt) of verbs with separable and inseparable prefixes, topic: travelling
2nd week - genitiv of names, prepositions von and bei used with names, topic: family, family tree
3rd week - local prepositions with dativ and akkusativ and the verbs used with them, adverbs rein, raus, ..., topic: giving directions, neighbours
4th week - indefinite pronouns in dativ and akkusativ, topic: household, in a restaurant, eating habits
5th week - Konjunktiv II. (the subjenctive), the preposition wenn, topic: advice
6th week - reflexive verbs, topic: sport and fitness
7th week - verbs with prepositions, question words, topic: expressing of feelings
8th week - past tense of modal verbs, topic: education
9th week - preposition dass, topic: expressing of opinion
10th week - dativ object, topic: ideas, gifts
11th week - word order of objects in the sentence, topic: wedding habits, planning of a party
12th week - revision, eventually test
