Course detail

Building survey and building reconstruction

FAST-CI53Acad. year: 2013/2014

Preparation procedure and evaluation of results of building-technical survey. Quality control of survey.
Meaning of survey in life cycle of structure, methods of estimating the rest lifetime of construction.
Data for static calculation and project of repair of reconstruction.
Practical radiography of reinforced constructions.
Seminary paper concerns survey of chosen engineering construction according to student’s specification, practical application of diagnostic methods in laboratories and determination of data for static calculation of construction.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Theoretical introduction and practical implementation of diagnostic methods for determining the properties of materials and structures. Procedures for testing of concrete, brick, stone and timber structures. Based on the gained knowledge the student will be able to choose the optimal method for the diagnostic of the case. Student will be able to practically use diagnostic methods for determining the properties of materials in various types of structures. At the end nude for practical exploration of the structure.

Prerequisites

Building materials, Testing and technology, Diagnostic of building constructions.

Co-requisites

Structural mechanics, elasticity theory of solids, the effects of static and dynamic loads, elements of concrete structures, concrete bridges, masonry construction.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Educational activity is provided lectures and laboratory sessions.
Lectures consist of an explanation of basic principles, implementation methods and techniques of evaluation.
During laboratory exercises students perform practical measurements (hardness, ultrasonic testing of bores, search reinforcement, testing masonry, etc.) and evaluate the test results.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The condition of the course is attendance at the laboratory sessions, submission of all records, attendance at the field trip and defence of seminary work on the topic: A survey of the building.

Course curriculum

1.-2. Division of building surveys. Preliminary building survey and its impact on project.
3.-4. Fundamentals of detailed building survey.
5.-6. Fundamentals of survey of concrete and reinforced concrete structures, properties of used materials, verification of reinforcement.
7.-8. Fundamentals of survey of masonry.
9. Survey of composite buildings.
10.-11. Fundamentals of survey of lumber constructions, bearing beams of roof constructions.
12. Specifics of survey of historical and sacred buildings
13. Practical radiography of reinforced concrete.

Work placements

Not applicable.

Aims

Theoretical acquainting and practice realizing of diagnostics methods used for material properties detection in various types of structures. Based on acquired knowledge the student will be able to choose the optimal method for given diagnostics task.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Extent and forms are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.

Recommended optional programme components

Specialized excursion - inspection of the bridge.
