Selected Problems of Design and Realization of Metal and Timber Structures and B

Design assisted by testing, utilization of the experiments results for the design civil engineering structures, methods of evaluation of test results. Reliability of metal and timber structures.
Structural systems of temporary bridges, specification of their design and usage, systems of floating bridges - basic information. Composition and structural detailing, analysis of static behaviour.
Knowledge of theoretical and experimental verification of the behaviour of temporary bridges. Usage of temporary bridges.
Some selected problems of design and realization of steel-concrete structures and bridges. Some selected problems of design and realization of timber or timber-concrete structures and bridges (in dependence on the actual knowledge and results of the science, research, innovation and practice in the field mentioned).
Failures and reconstructions of metal and timber structures and bridges.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

General knowledge of the usage of experimental methods and results for the reliable design of civil engineering structures. Knowledge of the methodology of the design assisted by testing and its usage - evaluation of the design values of the material properties , evaluation of the design structural resistance. Temporary bridges and footbridges - the overview od the basic types of steel and timber temporary and mobile bridges and footbridges, practical examples. Selected topics of the design of advanced timber structures - spatial structures, special timber structures. Failures and reconstructions of metal and timber structures - basic overview, applications.

Prerequisites

Design of steel and steel-concrete structures and bridges, design of timber structures, structural mechanics, basis of statistics and probability.

Co-requisites

Extension of the knowledge in the field of the design of metal and timber structures and bridges. Extension of the knowledge of statistics and probability in relation to the problems of the reliability of steel and timber structures.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures, practical classes and self-study assignments. Attendance at lectures is optional, but attendance at classes is compulsory.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

For the successful graduation of this course it is necessary to elaborate the particular tasks within the exercises, which follow the exercise schedule and their extend is given by the teacher. The attendance in the exercises is compulsory. The exam is realized by the written form and its extend follows the course annotation.

1. Introduction to the study of the course. Terminology, sorting, requirements, characteristic of the temporary bridge structures.
2. Basic bridge systems of metal temporary bridges.
3. Metal and timber temporary supports.
4. Temporary timber bridge structures.
5. Systems of the floating bridges.
6.-7. Fire resistance of steel-concrete and timber-concrete structures.
8.-9. Experimental verification of elements and parts of metal and timber structures - loading tests, experiment realization.
10.-11. Statistic elaboration of experimental data.
12.-13. Probabilistic evaluation of test results - design assisted by testing.

The objective of the subject is to introduce students to the problems of this course and to practise acquires knowledge and skills.

Syllabus

1. Introduction to the study of the course. Experimental verification of members and components of metal and timber structures - possibilities of experiments realization, types of the tests, test results.
2.-3. Statistical elaboration of experimental data obtained from the loading tests.
4.-5. Probabilistic evaluation of test results - design assisted by testing.
6. Terminology, sorting, requirements, characteristic of the temporary bridge structures.
7. Basic systems of steel temporary bridges: plated-girder and truss-girder temporary bridges.
8. Mobile steel bridges. Temporary timber bridge structures.
9.-12. Selected topics of the design of advanced timber structures: spatial timber structures, timber structures combined of various materials, connections of modern timber structures.
13. Failures and reconstructions of metal and timber structures and bridges.

Syllabus

1. Examples of experimental verification of steel, steel-concrete and timber structural members and components - presentation of loading tests, examples of experimental data obtained from the tests, character and types of test results.
2.-3. Statistical elaboration of experimental data obtained from the loading tests: training using the sets of material tests results - determination of physical mechanical properties of steel, concrete, glass-fibre-concrete, structural glass.
4.-6. Probabilistic evaluation of test results: training using the sets of loading tests results - determination of the design resistance of steel and steel-concrete columns, thin-walled steel beams, timber beams strengthened by external bonded FRP reinforcement.
7.-8. Temporary bridges: examples of the design of modern temporary structures - presentation of the results of static and structural design of steel temporary footbridge.
9.-12. Selected topics of the design of advanced timber structures: examples of the design of selected members and connections of timber structures.
13. Calculation of the load-ability of steel railway bridge.
