Surface Treatment of Materials

FCH-BCO_PUMAcad. year: 2014/2015

The course makes students familiar with the mean, methods and technology of surface treatments of materials and about methods and equipments of simulation and operational testing procedures in according to ISO and EN standards. It is possible the expert knowledge apply to solve of concrete problems of surface engineering in industry and professional practices and within of investigation and development projects solutions, too.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Learning outcomes Surface treatments of materials are comprehensive knowledge base and field degradation of materials and finishes, allowing listeners realizing knowledge in solving specific finishing projects of industrial products and consumer goods.

In particular, it is the knowledge of the fundamental principles of material degrada-tion due to environmental and mechanical effects, with an emphasis on various forms of degradation in atmospheric conditions. This allows appropriate selection of struc-tural materials for the anticipated corrosion and chemical environment.
Of the basic types of surface treatments, especially in terms of their designation, functions and applications of the products of different material composition and structural arrangement are projected output pre-edit process knowledge. Knowledge of protective coatings, based on the description of the basic system produced indus-trially prepared using paints and paint systems, knowledge making and properties of metallic coatings and coatings of new generation alloy coatings and composites (dis-persion) coatings.
Another important outcome of the course is the possibility of applying knowledge gained in the field of surface treatments for transport and storage.
Equally important output object, forming an integral part of the previous output, the knowledge of methods and technologies for the removal of selected finishes (conservation preparations, old paint, graffiti as a social phenomenon, etc.).
Presented results of studies in a whole allow listeners used both in research and development of new methods and means of surface treatments, and in design (de-sign) and finishing application in industry with knowledge of the issue.

Prerequisites

Students are expected to be familiar with basic types of metal and chemical materials, with the relationship between their structure and physical-chemical properties. Knowledge of basic meteorology and atmospheric environment is an advantage.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The exam is oral. Student answers 3 questions; theoretical topic on deterioration of materials and two themes on surface treatments and their testing. The understanding of a system approach and scope of knowledge of basic of surface engineering is emphasized. Extra bonus points (24%) can be awarded for the presentation of voluntary homework set.

Aims

The goal is to provide a targeted audience interested in finishing materials, basic professional information in the field.
It is based on the assumption that knowledge of the mechanism and kinetics of degradation of different materials are to optimize the system finishes necessary.
From this perspective, the subject divided in two on consecutive issues (degrada-tion of materials and surface treatment materials) and in 13 basic topics. Of these, the first five's objective is to introduce the basic principles of materials degradation due to environmental and mechanical factors. In terms of limited scope is made more detailed description of the degradation process only for metals, plastics and rubbers.
Eight of these topics describes of the basic types of finishes, especially in terms of their designation, functions and applications of the products of different material composition and construction arrangement.
In describing the surface treatments is given to the methods and technologies as well as deleting the selected finishes (preservatives, old paints and graffiti).
Problem areas are complemented by practical exercises, or by visiting a profes-sional workplace, in order to provide students with a more comprehensive view of reality surface engineering in industrial practice.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance at the lectures is voluntary, by highly recommended.
Students can take the opportunity to write voluntary independent written homework. This homework set can be presented at the oral exam and it an be rewarded by an extra bonus grade improving the total grade.
