Learning outcomes of the course unit

Grammar, vocabulary, and four skills (writing, reading, listening and speaking) will correspond to B1 CEFR level.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Language exercise - 1 teaching hour per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to prove mastering English at the level corresponding to B1 CEFR (diploma supplement). The course is recognized for the FCH BUT bachelor program alumni who passed the examination in English for Chemists IV (corresponding to B1 CEFR) in their bachelor study program (not previously recognized) and also for students who will prove passing relevant examination by submitting their credit book or diploma supplement and annotation of the course preceding the examination at B1 level. The above students must also successfully pass the elementary written test (60%, see the example test) drawing on the English for Chemists I.-IV. textbooks.


Other students will sit for an examination testing their grammar and vocabulary and also reading, listening, speaking and writing skills at CEFR B1 level. The examination consists of a written (60% of the examination mark; based on English for Chemists I.-IV electronic textbook and a general English textbook at B1 level) and oral test (40% of the examination mark; students will e.g. talk about themselves, the branch they study, motivation to study chemistry and relevant interests from the studied subject).

Marks: 90-100% - A; 80-90% - B; 70-80% C; 60-70% - D; 50-60% E; less than 50% - not passed.

Aims

The aim is to enhance and develop students skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking), grammar and vocabulary so as the students would succeed in their future professional career and, moreover, to pass the examination in English corresponding to the CEFR B1 level successfully.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The course is recognized for the FCH BUT bachelor program alumni who passed the examination in English for Chemists IV in their bachelor study program and also for students who will prove passing relevant examinations; after the self-study preparation the above students must also successfully pass the elementary written test drawing on the English for Chemists I.-IV. textbooks.
Other students will do a self-study preparation using specified literature.
