Special laboratory classes II - CTEP

Beginnig of activities connected with working-out of the diploma thesis, realization of literature search, familiarization with necessary laboratory procedures and experimental techniques. Final presentation of achieved partial results.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Completing of the course will increase students' skills in the following aspects:
1. They will be thoroughly acquainted with the techniques and procedures used for realization of experimental part of their thesis
2. They will master advanced techniques of information retrieval in bibliografckých and full-text databases and their transfer to citation managers
3. They will be able to effectively use citation managers in writing scientific publications

Prerequisites

Skills necessary to work in a chemical laboratory obtained in basic laboratory classes and branch laboratory classes

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of specialized lab - 8 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The evaluation will be carried out both on the expression of student's supervisor to his/her activity (50%), and on the basis of the evaluation presented theoretical part of diploma thesis (50%).

Course curriculum

1. Familiarization with the specific methods and procedures appropriate for the implementation of the experimental part of the thesis
2. Mastrering of advanced methods of searching for information in bibliographic and full-text databases (construction of complex queries, specifics of search in different databases)
3. Presentation of the use of citation managers at an advanced level (transfer of selected records from the database, search akrtotéky, inserting citations in the text, vystváření bibliography, editing templates)
4. Development of the theoretical part of the diploma thesis

Aims

The aim of the subject is:
- Detailed acquaint of students with the techniques and procedures used within the frame of their diploma work
- Enhancing the skills of effective information retrieval in bibliographic and full-text databases available at BUT
- Enhancing skills focused on the application of citation managers available at BUT (CitacePRO, RefWorks) and their effective use when writing scientific papers
- Repeatition of the basic principles of the processing of analycal results and their interpretation

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is compulsory and is checked.
