Basics of Gerontology

The aim of the subject is to help students understand the process of ageing, understand the changes in the organism caused by ageing and look for a way for senior citizens to enjoy an active lifestyle via movement.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will gain knowledge about the process of ageing, they will understand the changes to the organism which are caused by ageing, and they will learn to look for a way for senior citizens to enjoy an active lifestyle via movement.

Knowledge gained during from theis sudies.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Exercises are focused on practical topics presented in lectures.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Form of the examination and the final classification of the subject:
Examination: Colloquium with the verbal assessment: PROSPĚL (pass) or NEPROSPĚL (fail).

Course curriculum

- The process of ageing, the theory of ageing, the demographic development of the population, the current situation in the Czech Republic, and in the world.
- Ageing of the individual organ systems.
- Functional geriatric examination.
- The specifics of diseases and pharmacotherapy in old age.
- Sleep disorders, behavioural disorders in old age.
- Mental changes in old age.
- Major geriatric syndromes - overview. Cognitive disorders in old age, dementia, delirium.
- Instability and falls in old age.
- Incontinence in old age, skin integrity disorders in old age.
- Immobilization syndrome.
- Nutrition and hydration disorders.
- Osteoporosis, osteoarthrosis, sarcopenia.
- Metabolic syndrome. Obesity and gout in old age.
- Diabetes, hypertension, disorders of lipid metabolism.
- Social aspects of ageing.

- Material covered in the lectured topics will be practised in the practical lessons, with a focus on the key areas of the given topic. Recommendations for self-study; preparation for the final exam.

Aims

The aim of the subject is to help students understand the process of ageing, understand the changes in the organism caused by ageing and look for a way for senior citizens to enjoy an active lifestyle via movement.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The subject is divided into lectures and practical lessons. Lectures and seminars are compulsory. The subject will be concluded with a colloquium. Any absence must be duly excused and substituted for after agreement with the head of the subject.
