Multimedia Transmission over IP Networks

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students are familiar with applications and protocols for video and voice transmission over IP networks. They are able to setup multipoint videoconference, oneway voice and video transmission in HD quality. They are able to connect and configure all communication components.

Prerequisites

  • Principles and application of Unix and Windows operating systems
  • Studying texts and documents in English
  • Network architecture - ISO/OSI model, TCP/IP
  • Unicast and multicast transmission

    Syllabus of lectures:
    1. Audio and video standards, interfaces, signals.
    2. Streaming, video on demand.
    3. Online audio and video.
    4. Videoconferences - H.323, SIP.
    5. Videoconferences - MBone, MPEG, mirrors.
    6. Virtual environment for communication.
    7. Audio-video technics and networking.
    8. Principles of IP telephony.
    9. Voice encoding and transmission over IP.
    10. IP telephony architecture.
    11. Quality of Services, IntServ, DiffServ.
    12. VoIP tools.

    Syllabus of laboratory exercises:
    1. Streaming on demand, RSTP.
    2. Online streaming - VLC, Windows Media Services.
    3. Videoconferences - MBone, mirrors, H.323
    4. Sharing workspace - VNC, shared notice board.
    5. Configuration of IP network - Cisco Unified Communication.
    6. Dial plans. Interconnecting POTS and IP telephony.
    7. QoS setting - classes, services, policies. Queue management.
    8. Packet classification. Different classes of transmission.
    9. IP telephony server Asterisk.

Aims

The course aims to introduce students technologies for video and voice transmission over IP networks. Labs will be focused on configuration video and voice communication using dedicated hardware devices and software applications.
