German for upper-intermediate students

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able to understand more complicated German texts and listenings and deal with more demanding everyday situations at the upper-intermediate level (B2 according to the CEFR). They will be able to express themselves spontaneously, fluently and precisely and furthermore, they will be able to use more advanced phrases and idioms. Students will also have mastered a number of more advanced grammar phenomena, including adjectives (formation, prepositions, position in the sentence), verbs with prepositions, verb formation (prefixation), word order in the main and subordinate clauses, revision of past tenses, negation, grammatical gender and plural of nouns, compound nouns and substantivization. Students will have mastered vocabulary on the following topics: appearance and character, how to learn new vocabulary, on-line learning, formal and personal letter, travelling, sightseeing in a city, describing a building, tourist information, talking with friends, shopping and complaining, love, describing a photograph and expressing assumptions They will be able to talk about abstract concepts and present and justify their opinions.

Prerequisites

Students should be familiar with grammar and vocabulary covered in the courses BYN1, BYN12, BYN2, BYN22, BYN3 and BYN32. They should be familiar with relative clauses with prepositions, adjectives as nouns, various subordinate clauses, Partizip I and II used as adjectives, two-piece conjunctions and future tense Futur I. They should be able to speak fluently on common topics and understand both oral and written language discourse. They should be able to express themselves in a comprehensible way, avoiding grave mistakes.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Grammar and vocabulary is practised in an interactive way with emphasis on conversation. Furthermore, the lessons focus on the development of students communication and listening skills - for this purpose, interactive audiovisual technologies, LMS Moodle and SmartBoard are used.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To be able to get their credits, students need to attend classes regularly (max. 3 missed classes/semester) and actively participate in the lessons.

9th week - negation with the particle "nicht" and th pronoun "kein" / complaining in a shop
10th week - grammatical gender and plural of nouns / love
