Laboratory Tests of Building Materials and Components II

FAST-CJ10Acad. year: 2014/2015

The II phase of works in the summer term tutorial continues in basic experimental laboratory activities. The partial evaluation of achieved results from the first phase was the base for the selection of capacity demands on special methods and on apparatuses in laboratories of the Institute and on further procedures including the preparation and the number of tested samples. This is performed on the one hand individually on the other hand in coordinated way by the guarantor of the subject. In further course of time the results are separately evaluated with the utilization of information from home and foreign literature and by processing the results according to the recommendation of the degree work head. There are solved the organisational questions connected with the securing of possible tests repetition and the solution of extraordinary situations in finishing phases of laboratory tests for degree works. The organisational questions connected with laboratory test results verification in manufacturing organizations are solved too.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

In association with previous learning in the students acquainted in detail with laboratory equipment for testing as physico-mechanical and physico-chemical properties of building materials. The course is focused on the evaluation of specific building materials with which students encounter in their final year of studies. Students will be able for example.

Design a complex set of tests for real evaluation of specific building materials,
Comprehensively to interpret the relationship between the results and with the behavior of a particular material,
Based on the results of analyzes in an objective way to assess the condition of building materials,
Implement thus obtained knowledge to solve a thesis and then to be able to convert them into practice.

Prerequisites

Technological procedures of test pieces preparation, testing methods following technical standards and procedures

Co-requisites

Knowledge technologies for the preparation of specimens for each type of building materials (cement composites, ceramics, etc.). Knowledge of methods for testing these materials in accordance with relevant standards and practices.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
The content of the lectures is prepared in the digital form of presentations with the largest share of graphic details that will allow to closer understanding the objective issue. The content of exercise lectures is based on the digital presentation of task, which is then clearly undertaken by experiment and then student must compile and evaluate the results in the reports

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Attendance at seminars is compulsory. During the exercise students work protocols, protocols of the working groups, some individually. Quality protocol is evaluated spot. Preparation of the final test with at least 65% success rate. According to the above points gained, students are classified.

Work placements

Opportunity to attend seminars and conferences relevant to solving problems. These include the international conference Testing and quality in construction, which is held every year BUT Brno etc.

Aims

Acquire knowledge and skills for independent elaboration of experimental part of dissertation. Selection of adequate methods, preparation and adaptation of test pieces, proposal of experimental works timetable, realization of experimental work and evaluation of laboratory tests results.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Extent and forms are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.

Recommended optional programme components

Fundamentals of mathematical statistics. Ability to evaluate and interpret the obtained results. Knowledge of basic relations between the physico-chemical properties of the material and its physical and mechanical parameters.
