English 4 for Combined Type of Study

The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. Also deals with ESP. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures for everyday communication at pre-intermediate level.

Prerequisites

Course is intended for students within the combined study programmes who are familiar with the language at elementry level. They are expected to have the knowledge and skills corresponding secondary school courses and successfully completed the course A3K. It follows up on the grammar and vocabulary learnt.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is intended for the combined form of study, indivudual work of students is directed by lectures and exercises taught en bloc.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having attended the seminars actively, worked out assigned tasks and passed a credit test. Altogether it is required to get at least 30 points out of 50 in this test. In case this benchmark of 60% is not achieved, there is
a possibility for the student to resit the test.
Finally, students' work in the e-learning support of the course is also reflected in the overall course assessment.
Exam has a written and an oral part (80 and 20 points). The scope corresponds to the pre-intermediate level and the courses A3K-A4K. The aim of the examination is to prove student's knowledge and skills. He is expected to use the language as an independent user.

Aims

The aim of the course is to equip students for real-life tasks that arise in a wide range of technical occupations.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is systematically checked by the teacher. Absence may be in justified cases compensated for by the agreement with the teacher.

1. Introduction. U7 – Manufacturing (manufacturing processes, CD manufacturing, food and drink manufacturing, short sequence, Present Passive, compound nouns)
2. U8 – Transport (making and acknowledging apologies, less common forms of transport, car engines, the car of the future, prediction: will, may, might, recording new expressions)
3. U9 – High living: skyscrapers (showing visitors round a construction site, the tallest building in the world, how skyscrapers are built, foundation types, safety signs and safety advice)
4. U10 – Medical technology (giving clear instructions, devices for the blind, devices for the elderly, short description, relative clauses, opposites)
5. U12 – Information technology (working on a help desk, supercomputers, describing changes, CAD/CAM, computer peripherals, Past Passive, collocations)
6. U13 – Telecommunications (explaining in simple terms, satellite communication systems, VoIP phone systems, mobile phones, Past Simple and Past Perfect)
