Glass, Ceramics, Binder

Introduction in technology of ceramics, history of ceramics, evolution of ceramic manufacturing in Bohemia, trends of ceramic technology. Principles of ceramic technologies, preparation of ceramic materials, possibilities of forming, stabilities of clay based suspensions, rheological properties and their control, properties of ceramic pastes, Drying of ceramics, composition and structure of moist material, course of drying. Annealing of ceramics, rate of firing, calculation of temperature profiles in annealed product, kinetics of reactions. Relations between structure and properties. Mechanical properties, chemical resistance, thermal properties, viscous flow, creep, electrical and magnetic properties, optical properties.

Student gains knowledge about ceramics, theory of phase equilibrium and kinetks of processes at high temperatures during ceramics processing

Basic knowledge from inorganic and physical chemistry and silicate technology

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Course curriculum

1. Silicate raw materials, the basic elements of silicate raw materials. The importance of silicate raw materials for the production of ceramics, glass and mortar.
2. Definitions and classification of ceramics. Structure and properties of ceramics, bonds in ceramic materials.
3. The technological process of production of traditional ceramic materials based on clay raw materials
4. Refractory materials, definition, type, characteristics, properties and applications.
5. Advanced ceramics, oxide ceramics, non-oxide ceramics, and ceramic materials for medical applications, superconducting ceramics, and advances in the preparation of ceramics.
6. Definitions, characteristics, properties and uses of glass. Main groups of glass products. Types of glass according to chemical composition.
7. Glass melting process, melt characteristics, properties. Glass furnaces, types, construction, regenerator and recuperator
8. Glass production and environment
9. Inorganic binders, definition, classification, characteristics and properties. Non-hydraulic binders: plaster mortar, lime. Latent hydraulic materials: granulated blast furnace slag. Pozzolan: fly ash, calcined shale and metakaolin
10. Hydraulic binders: hydraulic lime, cement, types, properties and applications.
11. Technological manufacturing process of cement: preparation of raw meal, clinker burning and cooling, chemical and mineralogical composition of Portland cement clinker, setting regulator, furnace equipments for the manufacture of cement.
12. Cement hydration, setting and hardening processes, properties, standards. Mortars and concretes.
