Engineering of Chemical-Pharmaceutical Production

The course provides theoretical and practical foundations of Particular systems and Powder technology applied for the production of pharmaceuticals.
Particle systems characterization, basic parameters of particulates and the measurement of them. Grain sizing and morphology of particulates.
Conveying and handling of particulates. Comminution, separation, homogenization, segregation, compaction, aglomeration, size enlargement, drying and thermal processes of particulates.
Surface properties of fine-particle materials, sorption, surface moisture. Suspension and dispersion formation. Surface treatment of particulates. Material handling, sampling and dosing. Bulk properties of particulates. Pumping and dosing of fluids. Basis of bulk storage, hoppers and feeders design. Powder Technology project planning and the production control fundamentals. Dust nuisance. Particulates and drug production, handling operating safety.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of individual consultation. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Examination in the oral form, knowledge in the given lectures extent is demanded.

Course curriculum

1. Characterization of the particular systems , the basic parameters of the particular systems and their measurement. Grain size and morphology of the particle constituents of particulate systems.
2. Transportation, convaing and handling with particular systems. The issue of classification and separation .
3. The processes of disintegration, preparation of ultra-fine to nano - fine particulate systems.
4. Homogenization of powder systems, segregation, compaction, agglomeration, granulation, tabletting.
5. Drying and heat exposure of ultrafine particulate matter. Lyophilization .
6. Bulk properties of particulate systems, ways of the bulk properties measurement. Basis of bulk storage, hoppers, feeders and warehousing design.
7. Surface properties of fine-grained particulate matter , sorption properties , moisture transport and equilibrium moisture content of particulate matter.
8. Surface modification of powders. Surface treatment of solid dosage forms. Making the multi-layers systems.
9. Making suspensions and dispersions. Homogenization of liquids and pastes .
10. Sampling of particulate systems. Performance of solid dosage forms in containers , " blistering ", expedition .
11. The issue of transport, storage and dosing of liquid systems.
12. Specifics of measurement and control of chemical- pharmaceutical processes. The issue of planning , approval and implementation of new pharmaceutical processes.
13. Aspects of dust. Work safety with particular biological and chemical- active systems.

General knowledge of students about the today´s Powder Technology science possibilities used in practice of pharmaceuticals production.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Lectures on the most problematical points of the Powder Technology processes in the pharmaceutical industry. Permanently inovated lectures demand attending of students. Recommended literature and the main thesis of the lectures on www pages of Faculty of Chemistry is insufficient for the successfull exam.
