High Voltage and Electric Apparatus

Examination of the electric field, electrical discharges, testing power sources, measurement of high voltages and heavy currents, overvoltages and insulation coordination in power system. Functioning of electric apparatus in power circuits, switching processes, switching devices and functional properties of the same.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students will become acquainted with the essential problems of the high voltage technology, and with the properties and the use of electric apparatus installed in circuits.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required and the successful completion of subjects BFY1and2,BMA1,2and3 and BEL1and2.

Aims

To make the students familiar with basic issues of the high voltage technology, and with functions, properties and the use of electric apparatus installed in electric circuits.

Measurement of high voltages and heavy currents.
Examination of electric field.

Atmospheric and switching overvoltages.
Closing of electric circuits, temperature based effects and forces arising through the current flow.
Electrical contacts.
Design and operating properties of an apparatus without the presence of electric arc.
Design and operating properties of an apparatus in operation.
Design and operating properties of power switching devices.
Testing of electric apparatus.
Trends in the development of electric apparatus and their implementation in the power system.

Occupational safety in laboratories, test shops and switching stations. Adjustment of measured values to the atmospheric conditions.
Numerical calculation of voltage dividers and shunts.
Solution of wave processes arising in a power line.

Measurements on a circuit breaker.
Measurement of dynamic characteristics of electric arc.
Breaking of single-phase AC circuit.
Measurement of relative temperature of a plasma.
