Pragmatics

The subject give students information on pragmatic categories of language, namely pragmatic meaning interpreted by extralinguistic means and the awarness of cooperative principle and illucitionary force appropriate use. Such knowledge will facilitate students sophisticated use of language under professional conditions.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire basic information on linguistic pragmatics. They will learn about pragmatic categories i. e. pragmatic meaning, co-operative principle, politeness principle, illocutionary force. The role of professional knowledge and schemata in production and comprehension of specific texts on electrical engineering.

Prerequisites

The extent of knowledge at secondary school level, and the knowledge of English at pre-intermediate level.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of a course unit as specified in Article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Student´s knowledge of the subject will be examined by a written test on the topics presented in the literature recommended and the contents of lectures.

Course curriculum

Definitions of linguistic pragmatics. Reference and inference. Co-operative Principle and Politeness Principle. Methods of complying the principles. Speech acts. Producer´s strategies. Cultural schemata. Professional schemata. Pragmatic meaning. Application of pragmatic theories on specific discourse in electrical engineering. Practical analysis of electro-technical texts and determination of their pragmatic categories.

The aim of the course is to learn about the essential pragmatic categories i. e. pragmatic meaning, co-operative principle, politeness principle, illocutionary force and its modulation.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
