Highways I

Introduction to the road transportation. History, evolution and future of roads and road transportation. Basic design work, design documentation on the level of study. Highway routing, design elements of route. Choice of technical category, design elements for horizontal and vertical alignment, width configuration of a road in a cross section. Derivation of the minimal design parameters. Transitive curves, clothoid and its computation. Computation of curves. Computation of vertical alignment. Optimization of route, relation of horizontal and vertical alignment, aesthetics of road. Vehicles, motion resistance, dynamic factor, interaction of wheel and road surface. Assessment and evaluation of route design, alternatives, environmental assessment.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students are able to find routing of highway under uncomplicated conditions and draw and print a lay-out of plans. Students finalize basic project documentation according to czech standards. They are able to assess alternative solutions and find optimum.

Prerequisites

Linear algebra, function derivation, basic knowledge about the descriptive geometry - curve projection and space geometry, mechanics of mass point, kinetic energy, work and power.

Course curriculum

1. Highway network and its development.
2. Origin and evolution of the traffic demand. Traffic flow.
3. Intensity of the traffic flow, highway capacity, highway categories.
4. Highway routing, principles for design and surveying of roads.
5. Horizontal curves, minimal radius, transition curves.
6. Calculation and surveying of clothoidical transition curves.
7. Symmetrical curves.
8. Unsymmetrical curves and combined curves.
9. Vertical alignment, principles, design and calculation.
10. Design of horizontal alignment for the feasibility study.
11. Width configuration and the template cross section.
12. The assessment of design alternatives.
13. Vehicles for road transportation, the interaction between tyre and carriageway.
