Satellite Geodesy

Fundamental principles of satellite geodesy. Geocentric spatial coordinate systems and their changes in time. Time systems, calendar. Motion of a satellite in Earth´s gravity field. Unperturbed motion, gravitational influences, accelerations induced by Sun and Moon, solar wind pressure. Definition and realization of conventional inertial and terrestrial systems. Principles, methods and exploitation possibilities of satellite measurements in geodesy and geophysics (VLBI, SLR, LLR, DORIS, satellite altimetry, satellite navigation systems). Methods for determination of positions and time, accuracies and applications. GPS method. Principles of ambiguity resolution. Ionospheric and tropospheric corrections. Accuracy. Optimization of observation and processing procedures. Software systems SKI-Pro and Bernese.

Course curriculum

1. Fundamentals of satellite geodesy. Coordinate systems. Time systems. Motion of a satellite in Earth´s gravity field.
2. Inertial and terrestrial systems, definition and realization.
3. Satellite methods in geodesy and geophysics (VLBI, SLR, LLR, DORIS, satellite altimetry, satellite navigation systems).
4. GPS. Principles of ambiguity resolution. Ionospheric and tropospheric corrections. Accuracy.
5. Optimization of observation a processing procedures.
6. GPS processing software systems SKI-Pro and Bernese.

Understanding of satellite geodesy principles, inertial and terrestrial coordinate systems. Understanding of basic applications of satellite methods in geodesy and geophysics. Mastering of GPS applications including observation and processing procedures. Acquaintance with advanced GPS processing tools.
