Reviews and Presentation of Art

The course aims at the practical journalist writing skills essential for active artists who do not want to rely of theoreticians. Students will learn how to write reviews, texts for their catalogs, texts for catalogs of other artists, and introductory text for exhibition openings .

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The aim of the course is to teach students master the writing skills, which will help them with their self-presentation on the art scene.

Prerequisites

Students must be informed about contemporary art, both in traditional and new meida, they must be aware of the ways art is presented and critically reflecte and must be familiar with some texts written by other artists.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations..

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credit. Students will be given three assignments during the semester.
1. review (300 - 600 words)
2. a catalog proposal (PDF, min 5 pages - reproductions, a text by the author herself, a text by another participant of the course - max. lenght of texts 600 words)
3. introductory text for an exhibition opening (300 words)

Course curriculum

1. The specifics of texts dealing with art written by authors who are active visual artists. Distinguishing genres. Review in press, peer review, criticism. Active artists vs. art criticism
2. Writing the review. methodology. Structure of the review.
3. Making a catalog - methodology.
4. Self-presentation in a catalog.
5. Text for and exhibition opening

Aims

The course will emphasize the differences between the aforementioned genres and will teach students their peculiarities.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance is mandatory (70%). Attendance at the first two seminars is essential.
