Artistic Research III

Art research focusing on the body and the media based on a collaboration between the students and teachers of the FFA and the Faculty of Social Sciences of Masaryk University in Brno. The seminar is led by two teoreticians and an artist. The theoreticians are: the religionsit (doc. PhDr. David Václavík from FFMU - the Institute of religious studits]. The artist, Lenka Klodová from FaVU, processes topics related to the art projects of the students and to sociology and art theory in a mode which is a hybrid between art and theory.
propojení Favu /především ateliéru s hybridním zaměřením – tělový design, environment, performance, média…/ s příbuznými obory na MU /obor gender a obecně sociologické a filosofické obory na FSS a celé MU/
- v základu seznámit studenty s možností rozvinutí umělecké myšlenky do „art based research“ – uměleckého výzkumu
- srovnáním se studenty humanitních věd pochopit specifika uměleckého myšlení a uchopování problémů
- přehled základních vědeckých metodologických postupů
- průzkum možností dalšího uplatnění výsledků výzkumu – psaní článků, publikace, vizualizace sociologických výzkumů, zapojení se do grantových řízení
- pokus o týmovou práci ve skupinách složených i ze studentů- teoretiků i ze studentů- umělců
- seznámení se s typem umělecké tvorby, která je typická pro vyšší stupně vzdělávání, zvl. pro doktorandský program

Learning outcomes of the course unit

- Students from each college will be able to see the subject of their interest through the optics of the partner school
- art students will learn about the possibility of applying a systematic approach to their art. Such an approach is typical for the PhD. level, hence students who will have had experience with this seminar might decide to enter the PhD. program
- the seminar should lead to practical results. Their form will be determined by the topics chosen for processing. (Articles published in Umělec or on www.artalkweb.wordpress.com is one possibility, a regurarly edited website or a hybrid exhibition are other. )
- the seminar should teach students to manage their research/artwork (grants, corret documentation)
- as the issues of the body and the media stand in the centre of attention, the seminar will attemprt ot connecting students with other subjects, museums, NGOs, research subjects, etc.

Prerequisites

We prefer students who base their art on similar principles as those stated in the course description.

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations..

Exam. Group project. Miniconference, submitting of the project in digital form.

Course curriculum

The revaluation of the body. The body as a prison, the body as a temple.

1. Introduction - previous projects, itinerary, instructors
2. Lecture - R - the basic characteristicts of the body conceptualization in world religions
3. Lecure - U - the body and the ritual/Viennese actionists, rituals in performance
4. seminar - setting op working groups, topics brainstorming
5. lecture - R - the dualism of the body and the soul within the context of antiquity and Biblical tradition
6. Lecture - U - woman's body/the ritualization of woman's body in feminist art
7. Seminar - All Saints' Day workshop
8. Lecture - R - corporeality and sexuality and their acceptance or refusal in big religious traditions
9. Seminar - topics presentations by individual groups
10. Lecture - U- the body and pain/St. Sebastian, Flanagan, Pane, Mendieta, BDSM
11. Seminar - mid-term check up
12. Lecture - revauation of the body and sexuality in contemporary religiosity
13. seminar - tutorials on projects before their submitting

Aims

- connecting the FFA with related disciplines at FSS and all humanities at the MU
- teaching students about the possibilities of art-based research
- by comparing approaches of the students of sociology at FSS, leanrning to understand the specifics of thinking and solving problems through art
- a survey of basic research methodologies
- further possibilities of applying the research results: articles, books, visualization of the research, grants
- team colaboration (students - teoreticians with students - artists)
