A Survey of International History of Art of the 20th Century - First Half of the 20th Century

The lecture provides with the overview of art movements, tendencies and personalities mainly in the areas of painting and sculpture in the second and third decades of the 20th century in Europe and the USA. Expressive, dadaistic and surrealistic tendencies. The phenomenon of "Parisian School". Art deco, art of dictatorships.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The images presented at the lectures do not replace "kunst-historical" autopsy, but enables students to reflect pre-war art in various, often controversial, contexts.

Prerequisites

Students have to have basic knowledge of history and cultural history at the level of a high-school leaving exam.

1. Dadaism, Schwitters and his impact on neodada and pop art. Merz, the column, the building, the relief. Ernst, Picabia, Ray.
2. Duchamp in chronological presentation
3. Art deco, design, painting, photography. de Lempicka, Cassandre, Erté and 1960s psychedelia, color photography - Madame Yevonde.
4. Surrealism. France, Belgium. Magritte, Delvaux, Bathus.
5. Dalí, Buňuel, Hitchcock. Overlaps of surrealism into objects (Duchamp), photography, social life (Warhol)
6. International surrealism. Matta, Lam, Parisian School.
7. German art of the 20s and 30s.
8. Mexican and US art from the 20s to the 40s.
9. Sculpture from Rodin to Bourdell. Expressionism. Minne, Lehmbruck, Barlach, Metzner, architecture.
10. Constructivism and sculpture. Pevsner, Gabo, Hepworth, Calder.
11. Sculpture after surrealism. Moore, Giacometti, Noguchi.
