Spanish language A2 - 1

Content of the course
Practical skills: Shopping, description of clothes, talk about illnesses and remedies, giving advice, talking about past habits, future plans and intentions, ask and answer questions, describe the past and ask about past events, talk about the past in general terms, expressing obligations and prohibitions.
Grammar: Direct and Indirect object pronouns, concordance between adjective and noun, comparatives and irregular comparatives, verb DOLER, Imperfect past tense of regular and irregular verbs, IR + verb, question words, past simple and its use in biographies and for talk about the past in general, present perfect, HAY QUE, etc.
Vocabulary: Clothing and personal items, colours, adjectives, human body, dates and numbers, travelling and holiday.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student is able to understand basic information if they are produced in a standard manner. Students learn to produce basic coherent texts that cover basic topics. The level acquired is A2- according to EFR. After completion of the course the student is able to use with confidence past tenses with relative fluency in the context of simple past events. The student is also able to express past - present relation with relative effortlessness. The student is able to describe everyday events without major hesitation. The student is able to talk about shopping, health, daily routines. In the cultural context the student is able to understand simple texts describing historical events and facts about Spanish speaking countries.

Prerequisites

In order for the student to enter this course it is important that he/she has knowledge of Spanish at A1+ level. The student should have mastered genders of the most used nouns and adjectives, should have knowledge of the basic questions words in Spanish in order to be able to form simple questions. Present tense, basic prepositions and very basic prepositional frases are required. The use of articles, the verb "to be" in both forms (SER - ESTAR). Student should be able to actively use subject, posesive, reflexive and object pronouns. From the lexical point of view the student should have knowledge of profesions, nationalities, colors, numbers cardinal and ordinal, food (basic), leisure activities, the calendar year (days, weeks, months).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

In each class there are 16 students at the most. The communicative method is used most of the time. Audiovisual equipment and internet are used during sessions as well. Types of exercises covered are listening, writing, reading, reading comprehension, pair or group tasks.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The requirements for the succesful completion of the course are attendance (no more than 3 sessions missed) and active participation in class. If the student does not fulfill the above mentioned, then it is necessary to take an "End of course test" at the end of the term. The score of the test needs to be above 50% in order to successfully pass it.

Week 2 - Unit 9B -Basic colors. Dscribing clothes. Noun-adjective concordance.
Grammar and spelling rules of /g/ /j/.
Week 3 - Unit 9C -Comparatives (adjectives). Adjectives that describe cities.
Week 4 - Unit 10A-Human body. Health and sickness. Verb /doler/. Recommendations using /por qué no...?/
Week 5 - Unit 10B-Past habits. Past tense /imperfectum/
Week 6 - Unit 10C-Talking about plans and intentions. The use of /voy a.../ Grammar rules for word stress.
Week 7 - Unit 11A-Questions. Question words.
Week 8 - Unit 11B-Biographies. Describing past events. Grammar rules of question words.
Week 9 - Unit 11C-Dates and numbers.
Week 10 -Unit 12A-Use of the past simple tense.
Week 11 -Unit 12B-Use of the present perfect tense.
Week 12 -Unit 12C-Use of /Hay que/ /no se puede/.

Aims

The aim of this course is to teach the Spanish language and the basic communicative skills that are necessary to achieve the level A2- according to the EFR (European Frame of Reference). For a successful completion of the course the student should have mastered the uses of past tenses in different contexts, question formation and answering, description of daily habits including past habits. The student learns to express himself/herself in the context of shopping, health, will be able to talk about emotional states, past and present events. In the cultural context the student will learn about facts of Spanish speaking countries in the context of art, differences among different Spanish speaking countries, Hispanic celebrities, interesting places and traditions.
