Safety Engineering

“Safety engineering” is focused on risk assessment in industry, agronomy, transport and pipelines, near potential fire sources. It uses technical, environmental and economical knowledge.
This issue includes analysis and risk modelling. The subject also deals with building constructions and its static, prevention, safety and resistance for the concrete emergency incidents.
Part of subject includes: related Czech and European Union legislation.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will learn methods of risk assessment using the computer procedures and the software. Students apply Czech and European directive on concrete situations therefore they will learn methods of financial evaluation by concrete accidents.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching is carried out through lectures and seminars. Lectures consist of interpretations of basic principles, methodology of given discipline, problems and their exemplary solutions. Seminars particularly support practical mastery of subject matter presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Students will actively participate in practical lessons. The lessons will be structured in project form, whereby, theoretical knowledge is practically applied and used. The exam will be in form of written test based on theoretical knowledge.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction and definition of subject “Safety engineering”.
2. Introduce with Czech and EU legislators and in other world countries in field of labour protection and risk.
3. Duties of employers and workers. Assessment of work system exposure.
4. Danger in chosen work activities. Professional federal inspection regarding safety work system.
5. Summary of methods concerning risk sources identification and risk assessment.
6. Risk by chosen industry and agriculture operations.
7. Risk by non-working operations, storage, transport and pipelines.
8. Risk by potential fire and explosion sources.
9. Counting methods of the shock wave and heat radiation.
10. Building construction basic and static, its prevention, protection and resistance to the concrete emergency incidents.
11. Economical aspects of accidents, unwanted technological events.
12. Manipulation with harmful substances.
13. Practical software usage.

Aims

Students will be introduced to the theoretical knowledge and their practical usage by means of solving concrete emergency situations by designated companies, concerns, situations and accidents. Students who complete the course will be able to solve concrete emergency situations and to assess the situation from several aspects (economical, consequences on environment and population, and safety), using the knowledge of actual international and European legislations.
