English for Bachelors - Pre-Intermediate 2

The English course for using English both accurately and fluently.
Grammar and vocabulary are taught and explained thoroughly,and all four language skills are developed systematically.It combines traditional methods of language teaching and more recent communicative approaches.
The students will work with technical texts to get acquainted with basic technical terminology.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Widened grammar skills up to present perfect together with vocabulary syllabus including dictionary training.
The students
- will master the basic grammatical structures and new vocabulary, necessary for everyday communication and writing, both general and technical.
-use a specific and general vocabulary (job/career, business, character traits, graph description, food, leisure time)
-apply grammar rules to common situations (present tenses, past tenses, the present perfect tense, the future tense, making questions, making comparatives and superlatives)
-communicate fluently and effectively in different contexts with certain error tolerance (job/career, travelling, business, sports, hobbies, social situations) and express his/her opinion, agreement, disagreement
-read technical and general articles when using basic reading techniques (skimming, scanning, selection of relevant information, accurate comprehension)
-understand English instructions and classes taught in English, and take notes; understand natural spoken English in a certain context
-write a formal letter or an informal e-mail, fill in an application form, describe a person and a place

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required,ie.:
-successfully finished course for beginners at secondary school, or at UJAZ/FEKT, or acquiring of 21 - 30 points in entry placement test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
Tutorials promote the practical mastery of the subject presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Active 75% attendance at classes and continuous work on given assignments.
A credit test - 40 points.
Examination: listening - 30 points
reading comprehension - 30 points

1.Unit 7: Present Perfect Simple in contrast with Past Simple. Opinions and suggestions, agreeing and disagreeing.
2. Unit 7: Present Perfect Simple - practice. Description of trends - graphs. Characteristics of companies.
3. Unit 8: Modal verbs (should,may,might)- explanation and basic practice. Word formation and work with a dictionary.
4. Unit 8: Reading comprehension - practice. Nationalities and different cultures. Reactions to invitations.
5. Unit 9: Review units 5-8. Present perfect simple and continuous.
6. Unit 9: The language of news - word collocations. Offers and requests.
7. Unit 10: Expressing future using WILL. Prepositions of place.
8. Unit 10: 1st Conditional. Prepositions of place. Reading comprehension.Asking for information.
9. Unit 11: 2nd Conditional - compared to 1st Conditional. Description of cities and life standards.
10. Unit 11: 2nd Conditional - practice. Social responses.
11. Unit 12: Passives: Present Simple, Past Simple, Present Perfect, Future. Word building.
12. Unit 12: Passives - practice. Thanking for hospitality, saying goodbye. Review units 9-12. Summary.
13. Semester test.

Widening student's understanding of English at pre-intermediate level.
Extending their abilities to use the language for communicative purposes:
-in common situations
-in specific topic situations.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
Attendance - 75%,fulfilling the tasks.
