English for Bachelors - Pre-Intermediate 1

The course is focused on the basic knowledge of grammar:
tenses, time and conditional clauses, infinitive, reported statements, articles, etc.
The students' ability to communicate in everyday situations is developed as well as writing of letters, CV and filling in forms.
The students will work with technical texts to get acquainted with basic technical terminology.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students' ability to communicate in everyday situations will be developed. They will master the basic grammatical structures and new vocabulary, both general and technical.
They will learn to
- use a specific and general vocabulary (job/career, business, character traits, graph description, food, leisure time)
- apply grammar rules to common situations (present tenses, past tenses, the present perfect tense, the future tense, making questions, making comparatives and superlatives)
- communicate fluently and effectively in different contexts with certain error tolerance (job/career, travelling, business, sports, hobbies, social situations) and express his/her opinion, agreement, disagreement
- read technical and general articles when using basic reading techniques (skimming, scanning, selection of relevant information, accurate comprehension)
- understand English instructions and classes taught in English, and take notes; understand natural spoken English in a certain context
- write a formal letter or an informal e-mail, fill in an application form, describe a person and a place

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required,ie.:
-successfully finished course for beginners at secondary school, or at UJAZ/FEKT, or acquiring of 10 - 20 points in entry placement test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
Tutorials promote the practical mastery of the subject presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Active 75% attendance at classes and continuous work on given assignments.
A credit test - 40 points.
Examination: listening - 30 points
reading comprehension - 30 points

Course curriculum

1. Unit 1: First meetings.Present Simple. Types of questions.
2. Unit 1: Frequency adverbs.How to organize vocabulary - topic groups, verb groups etc. Introductions and greetings.
3. Unit 2: The world of work.Present Simple versus Present Continuous. Word groups for the topic work and occupation.
4. Unit 2: Verb expressions.Describing a company. Making contact with a business partner.
5. Unit 3: Challenges.Past Simple - regular and irregular verbs. Sports and leisure - verb groups.
6. Unit 3: Past Simple - finishing. Reading comprehension. Welcoming a visitor.
7. Unit 4: Plans and arrangements. Expressing future: going to+infinitive, Present Continuous. Words and symbols.
8. Unit 4: Writing letters, emails, faxes. Staying at a hotel.
9. Unit 5: Healthy lifestyle.Countable and uncountable nouns. Expressing quantity.
10. Unit 5: Vocabulary file for food and drink. Reading comprehension.At a restaurant.
11. Unit 6: The language of comparison -comparative and superlative adjectives. Vocabulary file for air travel.
12. Unit 6: Description of changes- reading comprehension. Making arrangements. Technical text. Revision.
13. Semester test.

Aims

The course for lower intermediate students is aimed at learning basic vocabulary and grammar and at developing the four language skills:
reading, writing, speaking and listening.
The students will learn basic technical terminology.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.
Attendance - 75%,fulfilling the tasks.
