Foundry Technology

Basic methods applied to the production of castings, manufacturing sand moulds and cores, moulding processes, binder systems in sand mixtures, basic principles of foundry alloys melting, sand and permanent mould casting, gravity and higher pressure
pouring, gating systems, basic principles of foundry alloys solidification and cooling,consequences of volume changes of foundry alloys and their removal by risering , fettling operations and finishing process, final casting quality inspection.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The course provides students with basic knowledge of possibilities of using castings in
different practical applications from their design and material point of view.

Prerequisites

Basic principles of casting manufacture- knowledge obtained in 1st and 3rd year of the bachelorś study programme. Material science knowledge + appropriate parts of physics (liquid flow, thermomechanics, etc.)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work.

Exam has a written and an oral part.

Aims

The aim of the course is for students to obtain a general overview of different technologies
used for casting manufacture.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at lessons is obligatory. Absence may be compensated for by the agreement with the lecturer.
