Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students will become acquainted with the essential problems of the high voltage technology.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor´s degree level is requested.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of VUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Coursework: max. 49 points (Numerical exercises 10 points, Laboratories 39 points).
Requirement for the credit: min. 25 points.
Final Examination: max. 51 points.

Course curriculum

1) Introduction, electric field distribution.
2) High voltage and current measuring. Measuring by electrodes, impulse coaxial shunt resistors, capacitive and resistive voltage dividers.
3) The equipment of HV laboratories.
4) Terms used in high voltage technology, basic principles and types of discharges.
5) DC, AC and impulse test sources. Types of voltage and current impulses, chopping gap.
6) Test carried out in HV laboratories. Testing of insulators, surge arresters, cables. Measuring electric strength of insulating materials.
7) High voltage multipliers and bond wires.
8) High frequency high voltage laboratory sources, Tesla coil.
9) Wireless electric energy transfer.
10) The principles of measurement and evaluation of partial discharge.
11) Electrostatics and Maxwell's equations.
12) Discharges in an inhomogeneous electric field, distribution of impulse of across the coil, the voltage distribution on insulator chain.
13) Atmospheric discharges. Formation, types, parameters and line protection.
