Timber Structures (K)

History of timber structures, view of timber application in structures. Properties of wood and wood-based materials for structural purposes. Czech and foreign standards for structural design.
Limit states and rules of computer modelling. Basic types of strain of timber members and their verifying.
Fasteners – mechanical connections, glued connections.
Plane solid and truss structures – girders, frames, and arches. Rules of structural design and theoretical analysis.
Spatial structures – laminated structures, spatial trusses, ribbed domes, vaults and shells.
Timber bridges and footbridges. Specialized timber structures.
Production and assembly. Protection and maintenance.
Fire resistance of timber buildings.
Principles of reconstruction and rehabilitation.
Examples of realized timber structures.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student will learn and get under control the aims of matter in
teachings, focused especially to problems of design of timber elements,timber constructions and bridges, in term of content amplificated more in detail in the schedule of related training subject.

Strength and plasticity, section characteristics, design principles of structures and traffic constructions, loading of structural systems, building materials.

1. History of timber structures review, development prospects.
2. Properties of timber and timber-based materials for structural purposes.
3. Spatial configuration of timber structures, bent types, spatial systems.
4. Rules of computer modeling of timber structures.
5. Limit states in timber structures, methods of their verifying.
6. Basic types of strain of timber members and timber structures elements.
7. Connections of timber structures and examples of basic structural details.
8. Plane solid girders, frames, and arches. Design and structural details of glue laminated structures.
9. Truss girders, frames, and arches. Design of truss girder structures.
10. Structural safety against global loss of stability in timber structures, bracings.
11. Spatial structures – domes, vauts, shells, folds and structural construction.
12. Timber bridges and footbridges. Specialized timber structures.
13. Production, assembly, protection and maintenance of timber structures. Fire resistance of timber structures.
