Studio II - Drawing and Printmaking - winter

The course builds on the initial experience with the drawing and graphics. Students use and develop acquired experience leading towards discovering new possibilities and media. Students are neither dogmatic nor conservative. Emphasis is placed on experimental author's research leading to own discoveries. The core of the course consists of regular atelier consultations, intensive workshops, visiting domestic and foreign art exhibitions, plenaries and regular critical presentations of students work to external experts. At this stage, students are encouraged to work on regular basis, continually communicate and consult their work requiring strong work and creative engagement on their part. The environment of the studio, "creative dictatorship", is needed for the deeper immersion into selected subjects.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Knowledge of basic technological and artistic rules of the main graphic techniques. More advanced understanding of: linocut, dry point, monotype and transfer/copier process. Ability to transform graphic techniques in the contemporary art into thematic and conceptual issues. Advanced experience with linear and diary small-format drawings. Practical experience with themes utilizing drawing 'genres'. Knowledge of Czech and world contemporary art.

Prerequisites

Acquired knowledge of the field of study, mastering monotype, conceptual overlaps of frottage and ability to conceptualize own author´s project.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

At the beginning of the semester, the initiation of artistic research and consultation of pre-arranged individual themes takes place.The course is followed by regular group consultations of the supervisor and assistant of the atelier with the students over the approved semestral assignments. During the semester, individual tasks are individually assigned for each student or year.Regular presentations of completed semester work by external professionals.Part of the lessons are technological workshops for the semester (theme).Work on projects, visits to exhibitions and commented tours, plenipotentiaries.Teachers encourage students to actively discuss and present their work results. Both in the school field and in the gallery art practice. Student works, presentations, lectures, tutorials, debates, excursions, study of literature.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

In order to receive credit for the class, given conditions must be met:

-presence and participation in all mandatory regular consultations of semester projects (once a week)
-active participation in regular atelier projects and their consequent presentation (twice per semester)
-ability to reflect/accept recommendations resulting from consultations of semester projects
-fulfilling given tasks
-participation in atelier workshops and collaborative projects
-participation in the plenary
-evident interest in contemporary art

Presence is confirmed by signing the attendance list. One unexcused absence is allowed per semester.

Atelier exam is evaluated by a commission.

Course curriculum

Independent and continuous studio work, regular studio consultations with the studio leader (every week), participation on the joint studio projects, active participation in the regular studio critiques (usually 2 per semester), participation in joint studio workshops, extracurricular art activities, presentation of semestral project in front of the commission, public presentation of the semestral project within open days Enter FaVU.

Schedule:
1. Definition of the topic of artistic research or the author's project (alteration in the form of a possible atelier assignment).
2. Brainstorming, artistic research, experimentation, verification, variation.
3. Presentation and defense of studio criticism.
4. Participation in all joint events - namely plain-air workshop, studio workshops, excursions and events according to the program of the entire studio.
5. Installation, presentation and defense of semestral work.
6. Participation in a public presentation on an open day.

Aims

This intermedially focused course is based on classical drawing and printmaking techniques which are constantly examined, verified and critically thematised. Its aim is to further develop individual work which student achieves by working in the studio on mostly own topics. Student gets deeper into the Czech and foreign field discourse and learns to be more self-confident in choosing and defending adequate means as well as articulating the author’s language during joint consultations.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Mandatory regular consultation of semester project (weekly), active participation and presentation of created studio works at regular studio examinations (twice per semester), participating on studio workshops and collaborative studio projects, evident interest in the contemporary art.
Attendance list. Proven continuous work on the school premises.
A single absence at studio consultations is allowed.
