Course detail

Technical Measurement

FSI-ETAAcad. year: 2018/2019

The course "Technical Measurement" (ETA) familiarizes the students with measuring devices and their applications. Attention is paid to metrological confirmation in production processes. The focus is placed on the metrology of length, shape and relative position of components and functional surfaces. Students also learn basic methods for the measurement and assessment of parameters of surface texture.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After completing the course, the students will acquire knowledge and skills in metrology, that is, they will learn how to measure and check various geometric quantities and use adequate methods to check the precision of the measurement. The measurement will focus on lengths, diameters, surface quality, angles, cones, etc. using common means of metrology but also computer-aided state-of-the-art methods.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of engineering technologies. Basic knowledge on structure and properties of materials.
Principles and SI units for geometrical quantities metrology (physics).

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught through lectures explaining the basic principles and theory of the discipline. Teaching is suplemented by practical laboratory work.
According to the possibility of teaching can be organized lectures for students by practitioners and excursions to companies focused on activities related to the course content.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To receive credit in a seminar, a student must attend the required seminars, work out all the practical laboratory assignments, submit the reports on the experiments conducted and meet all the requirements of ongoing supervision (written tests of knowledge for particular seminars). If the attendance and ongoing supervision conditions have not been met, in well-justified cases, the supervising teacher may require the fulfilment of a substitute condition.
Examination: An examination consists of a written and an oral part. It verifies whether a student has learned the theoretical basics and their practical applications. The exam results also reflect those of the practical laboratory exercises, the experiment reports and the written tests. It is graded on the ECTS grading scale.

Aims

The course aims to acquaint the students with the essential legislation concerning quality and metrology with a view of the present European integration so that they can approach particular practical problems at the required level. As a result of acquiring theoretical knowledge in the course, the students should have an overall understanding of the practical issues of measurement and inspection of engineering products, particularly when evaluating geometric quantities.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance in lectures is recommended. If a student cannot attend a seminar on the required date, he or she may attend a substitute seminar with a different study group in the same week. If this is not possible (due to an illness or for a similar reason), he or she will submit an additional report or an assignment according to the instructions from the supervising teacher.
