An overview of genres and styles of popular music - including knowledge of important soloists and groups - focusing on blues, jazz and jazz rock in general, New Age, country, country-pop, bluegrass, and gospel.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will be able to:
- name and describe the origins of popular music, blues and their roots,
- describe briefly styles and personality of jazz music,
- describe the principles of jazz rock and name its main representatives,
- explain the nature of country, country-pop and bluegrass musical styles,
- describe the style of gospel music and its roots,
- characterize the New Age movement.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of general education is required, on the basis of which the student has passed the admission procedure.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in Article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
- Lectures consist of an explanation accompanied by the listening of music recordings and their analysis.
Participation in lectures is recommended.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The evaluation of study results follows the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and the Dean’s Regulation on the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. Credit is given for successful demonstration of knowledge in an interview.

Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with selected chapters from the history of popular music (blues, jazz and jazz rock in general, New Age, country, country-pop, bluegrass, and gospel).
