Learning outcomes of the course unit

Lectures provide basic information about the Earth, global plate tectonics and stratigraphy,origin and petrographical classification of rocks, rock forming minerals and their index properties, clay minerals and their importance for civil engineering practice, rocks as foundation ground and as construction material (aggregates and building stone), igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, their structures and mineral composition,physical-mechanical index properties of rocks and soils, endogenous geological forces-tectonics, volcanism, earthquakes,exogenous geological forces - oceans, lakes, water courses, frost effects, glaciers,geodynamic processes, weathering, suffusion, erosion, karst phenomena, landslides, hydrogeology,regional geology.
In practical classes, the aim is to acquire the ability to assess the properties of rocks as ground soil. For macroscopic determination of rocks, new textbooks have been supplemented with a special new stone collection.
The result of course is ability of students to identify the most common rock types, to evaluate the properties of the ground soil, to assess the impact of natural processes, including the effect of groundwater on building construction, desing and realize the survey of foundation soil for preliminary design.

Basic knowledge of science subjects at secondary school.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
Teaching includes optional lectures, field trips and workshops held currently in projects or independently by individual teachers.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The course is assessed as ongoing work, as well as managing content of course for the complete semester. Final evaluation has the written and oral form. The course is concluded by awarding credits based on the defense of seminar work and mastering the description of rock material and the successful completion of the exam. Specific conditions for successful completion of the course students are reported to the teacher at the beginning of the semester.

2. Rock structure – generally; Igneous rock structure, basic types of plutonic and volcanic rocks.
3. Basic types of sedimentary rocks, properties, behaviour and application of sedimentary rocks.
4. Basic types of sedimentary rocks, properties, behaviour and application of sedimentary rocks.
5. Basic types of metamorphic rocks, properties, behaviour and application of metamorphic rocks.
6. Endogenous processes in the Earth’s crust.
7. Exogenous processes in the Earth’s crust.
8. Landslides.
9. Ground water and springs.
10. Geological maps and information sources, methods of investigation of foundation ground.
11. Basics of regional geology of the Bohemian massif and Western Carpathians on the territory of the Czech Republic.
12. Overview of basic types of foundation ground in relation to geological characteristics.
13. Basic tasks of engineering geology in construction in relation to environmental aspects. Exploatation of rocks and their application in building industry.

Aims

The students will be acquainting with basic types of rocks forming foundation soils, including natural processes affecting their quality in time (endogenous and exogenous processes). The basics of hydrogeology are also an integral part of the study including the explaining of groundwater influence on behaviour and properties of foundation soil. The students acquire the process of engineering geological investigation for foundation soils within the I. geotechnical category (Czech Standard 73 1001).
