Chemical Engineering

ÚSI-2CDCIAcad. year: 2018/2019

Chemical and biochemical processes and apparatus fundamentals. Lectures are complemented by the computational and laboratory exercises. Mass balance, fluid flow, pumping, filtration, fluidization, mixing and particulate solids processing (characterisation of particulate systems, grain size measurement, separation, conveying systems, mechanics of particulate solids, storage systems). Heat transfer processes, enthalpy balance, heat transfer equipment, evaporation. Mass transfer processes basis - extraction, distillation and rectification, absorption, adsorption and ion exchange, drying, crystallization, reaction engineering.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will obtain the basic knowledge about:
1. The Fluids and Particle Solids Unit operations of Chemical Engineering which takes place in the design and passes judgments of the separate processes of the chemical and other production technologies in the laboratory and production plant size as well.
2. The Heat and Mass transfer Unit operations of Chemical Engineering which takes place in the design and passes judgments of the separate processes of the chemical and other production technologies in the laboratory and production plant size as well.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge in mathematics (basic vector, differential and integral calculus) and physics (basics mechanics, hydrodynamics, thermodynamics and diffusion processes).

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching is carried out through lectures and seminars. Lectures consist of interpretations of basic principles, methodology of given discipline, problems and their exemplary solutions. Seminars particularly support practical mastery of subject matter presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The student evaluation depends on the active attendance and the correctly solved separate numerical set of theoretical exercises. The exam consists of the written part and the oral examination; students have to show basic theoretical, numerical and practical knowledge in the branch. The use of defined literature materials in the written part of exem is allowed.

Course curriculum

1. Chemical engineering calculation.
2. Balance of energy in the stream.
3. Pressure drops in pipe-lines. Pumping.
