Learning outcomes of the course unit

– The student will acquire the ability to design architectural and functional solution of the object with more functional circuits
– The student will know the basic standard requirements for the design of buildings and will be able to apply them in the design.
– The student will acquire skills for elaboration of architectural study documentation.
– The student will be able to choose a suitable construction system for a concrete design of a construction.
– The student will be able to understand the context of the place and respond to it in the design.

Prerequisites

Enrollment in the studio assumes basic knowledge of building design and building construction. Moreover, according to the topic of the assignment also knowledge of the typology.
– Typology of residential and civil buildings
– Theory of Architecture (according to year)

Co-requisites

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
Creative studio work is the main and essential means of teaching architecture. It is based on the "learning by doing" method, i.e. gaining knowledge and skills by practical application. It consists in the dialogue of the teacher with the student over a project that is being developed.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The works are set and evaluated by work leader. Specialists from Institute of Construction and Building Structure consult the project according to its definition, eventually other practice specialists. Studio project is during processing phases shown on critics and continuously evaluated according to preset criterions.
Studio work is marked using ECTS mark scale.

Scoring of all components of the proposal and their weighted average.
– Place, interpretation, analysis, synthesis, idea
– Processes, operation
– Materiality, structure, construction
– Form, arrangement,
– Presentation, adjustment, defense

E: sufficient design, fulfillment of all assigned tasks, designed object is stable, does not show danger to life and health, meets legislative requirements (standards)
D: craftly correct design with partial drawbacks
C: good design, craft correct
B: very good design or excellent design with some shortcomings
A: excellent design with personal benefit, all aspects and components of the proposal excellent to excellent

The paper will contain a practical and theoretical part (method and reasoning of the proposal).
Mandatory annexes of the practical part:
– text (including background, analysis, objectives, principles and concept of design, construction and operation diagram)
– documentation of working sketches and photo documentation of working models
– the situation of wider relations
– the situation
– floor plans of individual floors
– cuts
– views
– spatial representation of the designed object incl. place in the context of the place
– spatial display of the interior
– architectural detail
– model (including photo documentation)
Mandatory attachments can be specified in more detail by the supervisor in the assignment. The paper will contain in a presentable form attachment containing both digital and manual processing.

Course curriculum

The student systematically prepares studio work according to the assignment. Work takes 13 weeks. The student regularly consults the work with the supervisor and other experts.

The content of the course will be:
– Analysis and interpretation, synthesis, idea and solution
– Development of the construction program,
– Sketches and design in the standard scope of architectural study, graphic representation of the concept,
– Presentation of graphical and verbal methods and results, adjustment, defence

Work placements

Aims

The aim of teaching this subject is to prepare the students for solving the architectural design of a big constructiong that puts more complex demands on the construction‘s function and structure , in a wider local context (and basic urban planning relationships).

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Obligatory participation in lessons according to the schedule at the time of the vertical studio, compulsory attendance at presentations / critical discussions and final public presentations.
Submission of works according to the assignment and observance of predetermined scope and deadline for submission of partial tasks and proposal.
