Audio Software

The course focuses on mastering work with various software for editing, producing and mastering of audio recordings. The subject is taught in the form of computer exercises and acquired skills are verified by two individual projects.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After course completion, students are to:
- record and edit audio files in common audio editing software
- perform mastering in common audio editing software
- record and edit audio files in common audio production software
- use an integrated mixer and audio engine in common audio production software
- record and edit MIDI data in common audio production software
- apply off-line effects and real-time effects in common audio production and audio editing software
- use automation and remote control of parameters and functions in common audio production software
- master computer-aided audio production
- edit audio track of multimedia of various formats

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the structure of the mixing consoles, principles of non-destructive editing of audio files, principles of hard disk recording, sound file formats and basic knowledge of MIDI protocol and computer notation are required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in article 7 of the BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations. Computer exercises are focused on mastering of skills. Active participation of students is required. Participation at other ways of instruction is checked. Course is taking advantage of e-learning (Moodle) system.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The credit is awarded for the submission of two individual works in the audio editing and production software. The minimal scope of the elaboration of particular individual projects are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantor of the course and updated for every academic year.

2. Wavelab audio editing software - mastering and multi-track editing of audio files
3. Sound Forge audio editing software
4. Individual project in audio editing software
5. Cubase audio production software - project structure, recording and editing of audio files
6. Cubase audio production software - structure of integrated mixer, plug-ins, external devices
7. Cubase audio production software - integration of MIDI tracks in the project, recording and editing of MIDI data, MIDI editors
8. Cubase audio production software - automation of parameters and functions, recording and editing of automation, remote control
9. ProTools audio production software - project structure and integrated mixer, DAE, differences from Cubase
10. ProTools audio production software - integration of MIDI tracks, editing of audio and MIDI tracks, automation of parameters and functions
11. StudioOne and Sonar audio production software - project structure and integrated mixer, differences from Cubase and ProTools
12. Individual project in audio production software
13. Notation in Cubase, use of sound bank and mix in Sibelius notation software

Aims

The aim of the course is to introduce students in the form of computer exercises to work with the most widely used software for editing, production and mastering of audio recordings.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

It is obligatory to work through all computer exercises in regular or alternative terms to complete the course. Other forms of checked instruction are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantor of the course and updated for every academic year.
