Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will acquire knowledge of raw materials for the silicate materials production.
Students will be able to gain the knowledge of bases of technology of the production of glass, ceramics and inorganic binders.
Students will acquire the knowledge of physical and chemical reactions occurring in the processing of glass, ceramics and inorganic binders.
Students will be able to recognize different types of glass, ceramics and inorganic binders.
Students will acquire knowledge of basic properties of the various types of glass, ceramics and inorganic binders.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of inorganic and physical chemistry.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Lecture - 2 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The subject is finished by passing written and following oral exam. It is necessary to gain 50% points in written exam for successful finishing of the subject. The topics of exam are published at e-learning system LMS Moodle prior the exam and they are in the range of the curriculum of the subject.

2. Definition and classification of ceramics, structure and properties of ceramics, bonds in ceramic materials, raw materials.
3. The technological process of production of traditional ceramic materials based on clay raw materials.
4. Refractory materials, definition, type, characteristics, properties and applications.
5. Technical ceramics, oxide ceramics, non-oxide ceramics.
6. Glass-ceramics, glass and crystalline coatings.
7. Definitions, characteristics, properties and uses of glass, types of glass according to chemical composition.
8. The technological process of glass production, glass melting process, melt characteristics, glass furnaces, types, construction.
9. Inorganic binders, plaster mortars, lime.
10. Ordinary Portland cement, definition, raw materials, the technological process of production.
11. Cement hydration, setting and hardening, mortars, concrete.
12. Lecture of a specialist form industry.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge of silicate chemistry and technology from different fields with emphasis on physical and chemical characteristics of raw materials, physical-chemical reactions and processes, technological equipment and properties of products.
