Computer Skills – Introduction to GIS

This course will help students to develop their studio designs using GIS tools. The classes provide practical work with ArcGIS Pro software and open-source spatial data. The course includes practical home assignments in which students will experience the whole process of creating a GIS project – from the creation of input data to 2D output in the form of a map.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

  • Students will be able to develop a simple GIS project.
  • Students will learn how to use open-source spatial data and how to complement with own data.
  • Students will learn to work with spatial analyses.
  • Students will be able to visualize the spatial data following the cartographic principles.
  • Students will be able to build a 2D map with all details required by the cartographic principles for creating maps.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

For the students of architecture, GIS is a tool for creating projects in the main courses of their study. Therefore, this course emphasizes the practical use of GIS tools and ArcGIS Pro software. Working with GIS develops analytical thinking which is necessary for successful development of projects. The main teaching method is students´ individual work on the assignments with the assistance of the teacher.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation is based on the practical assignments which are submitted in electronic version. The assignments, their form, and the deadlines are specified by the teacher at the beginning of the semester.

  4. Creating own data (geometry and attributes)
  5. Analyzing spatial data
  6. Basics of cartographic visualization of spatial data
  7. Building a 2D map
  8. Building a map application in ArcGIS online
  9. Building a story map

Aims

The aim of the course is to learn how to use GIS tools in the process of creating architectural projects, and to learn about the open-source data. The course will introduce students to open-source data; students will learn how to create their own data and consequently how to visualize and analyse the data. The important part of the classes is the creation of outputs in the form of 2D map or story map which could be used for the presentation of architectural designs.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students must participate in the practical classes. Only one class can be excused. More absences must be discussed individually with the teacher. Students are obliged to submit 5 assigned practical tasks during the semester.
