Laboratory Classes in Instrumental and Structure Analysis - MS

FCH-MCA_ISA_MAcad. year: 2020/2021

Students are practically introduced with basic methods used for uncovering, observation and evaluation of supramolecular structure of polymer materials. Three quarters of practices serves for introduction with selected methods and the last one for self-measurement and characterization of one type of thermoplastic under suitable conditions. Selected are methods from microscopy, spectroscopy and thermal analysis. The stress is laid on the importance of proper preparation of the specimen, suitable setting of testing conditions, accurate evaluation and interpretation of the obtained data, but also on well-arranged report in right format.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The ability of students to prepare specimens for imaging on POM and CLSM, for measurements on DSC and FTIR-ATR, and to interpret the observed morphology and the obtained data.

Prerequisites

Macromolecular chemistry, Structure of materials, Physical chemistry of macromolecules, Polymeric materials

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course uses teaching methods in form of Laboratory exercise - 4 teaching hours per week. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The classified credit is awarded after:
- writing all particular introductory tests,
- passing all practices and handing particular reports over in time,
- passing self-measurement and handing final report in correct format at the latest in credit week,
- successful passing the credit test (minimum score is 60%).

Course curriculum

1. Introduction: Methods of direct and indirect imaging/deduction of supramolecular structure of polymers together with reasons for selected methods for practicing
2. Written test on the topic Polymer morphology and POM
Practice: Isothermal crystallization of selected thermoplastics using POM and evaluation of sperulite morphology
Report from measurement
3. Written test on the topic Methods used for uncovering of supramolecular structure and CLSM
Practice: Chemical etching of selected thermoplastics and observation of etched surfaces on CLSM
Report from measurement
4. Written test on the topic DSC
Practice: DSC of polymers targeted the structure change caused by different cooling rate, identification of polymers
5. Practice: DSC isothermal crystallization of the polymer tested on POM
Report from both DSC measurements
6. Written test on the topic FTIR
Practice: FTIR-ATR analysis of polymers and fillers, identification
7. Practice: Determination of the degree of crystallinity from FTIR-ATR spectra of selected thermoplastics
8. Report from both FTIR-ATR measurements
9. 8.–12.Self-measurement of one type of semicrystalline polymer using previous instruments according to teacher instructions and to production of the compact report in correct format.
10. 13. Credit test

Aims

The aim is to observe and deduce supramolecular structure of selected thermoplastics and to practice that final properties of polymer materials are done by supramolecular structure, which can be very easily changed by heating and different cooling rates of the melt.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance in all practices is demanded. In case of the absence, the practice can be compensated with another group or in the last week of the term. An unexcused absence is the reason for the loss of the credit.
Theoretical knowledge of students regarding the particular practice is examined by the written tests at the beginning of the practice.
Laboratory reports are demanded after each class and handover according to the instructions of the teacher.
