Reology

FCH-DCO_REGAcad. year: 2020/2021

Subject of rheology, linear vector functions, gradients, tensors, surface vector, divergence balance, affine transformation and tensor algebra. Simple shear and shear flow, simple shear kinematics, shear dynamics of elastic material, elastic materials and viscous liquids, kinematics of stationary simple shear flow, dynamics of simple shear flow of viscous liquids, shear response of viscoelastic materials. Viscosity and its measurement, viscosity functions of nonnewtonian liquids, thixotropy, dilatancy and antithixotropy. Linear viscoelasticity, basic tests of linear viscoelasticity: relaxationa and creep, mathematical foundations of linearity: Boltzmann's superposition principle, basic material functions of linear viscoelasticity for shear movements, relaxation spectra, influence of inertia on complex viscosity measurement, viscometric normal tensions.

Prerequisites

College physics and mathematics. Principles of (classical) physical chemistry. Calculus. Fundamentals of vectorial analysis in Eucleidean 3D space.

The course uses teaching methods in form of individual consultation. The e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to teachers and students.

Course curriculum

Mechanical behaviour and properties of materials: Newtonian liquids and Hookean materials.
Non-Newtonian liquids: Basic types, constitutional equations, thixotropy, rheopexy.
linear viskoelasticity: Maxwell and Kelvin models, material functions.
Viskozimetry and rheometry: Theory of measurement, devices.
Rheology and rheometry of disperzions (polymer solutions, suspensions, emulsions).

Acquiring basic notions and methods of non-linear continuum mechanics, used for quantitative understanding of the simple rheometrical flow situations, common in characterizing the flow properties of non-newtonian liquids.
