Fashion in Art – Art in Fashion

The course extends students to the horizons of visual culture about fashion. They knowas a sum of aesthetic, psychological, social aspects andmarketing strategies. It is an ideal example for postindustrial teachingtime. The content of the course is the lectures thatfocus on topical social themes (Identity, Sustainability and Technology).Emphasis is placed on understanding the context of fashion history with historical events and also focuses on context  with close-ups (graphic and product design, photography and semiotics).Fashion is a living medium and therefore the course is divided into lectures and practical exercises.The practical part of the course is experimental and encompasses the manual and mental ability of art students.By working on their own project, students will design clothing and / or clothing and createprototype.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students can generally perceive the relationship between body, clothing and culture.

They are able to distinguish the image of social groups in relation to their historical, social and cultural backgrounds.

They are aware of the causes and consequences of the global economy in the textiles and clothing industry. They can see possible solutions.

An overview in current trends and Smart Technologies.

Inspiration for students´s own artistic creation and design.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught in the form of lectures, which have the character of interpretation of basic principles and theory of given disciplineand exercises that promote, in particular, the practical control of the substance laid out in lectures or given for independent study with active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The condition of attendance of course is 50% attendance at lectures. In case of justified lower attendance, the student will replace the attendance, by submitting a semester work on the given topic in the exam period.

The main part of the evaluation is the submission of a project, which includes the design, implementation of a prototype and a written concept in the range of one standard page in the test period.

Aims

Students should lean how to understand fashion as social and economic discipline which can provide material for analysis, critical thinking, and/or creative potential for their own artistic practices.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Lectures are a comprehensive set dealing with one topic. The presentation is accompanied by a slide show and film demonstrations, recommendations on links to a website, and research of fashion magazines.

Exercises are based on the individual proposal of each student. The projects are consulted in the group and separately with the teacher.
