Electronic Components and Materials

FEKT-BPC-ESMAcad. year: 2020/2021

The subject is focused on knowledge in materials for electronics and electronics and basic electronics components (semiconductor diode, bipolar and unipolar transistor, passive components). The laboratory exercises are focused on practicing the properties of basic circuits with diodes and transistors.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

On completion of the course, students are able to:
- orient in materials for electrical engineering and electronics,
- classify electrotechnical materials in terms of electrical conductivity and behavior in electric and magnetic fields,
- define parasitic properties of resistors, capacitors and inductors and explain the impact of used materials and design to formation or suppression of these parasitic properties,
- explain the operation of PN junction as rectifier, voltage stabilizer and controlled differential resistance,
- describe the structure of the bipolar transistor and explain its operation,
- describe the structure of unipolar transistors JFET and MOSFET and explain their operation.

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the secondary school level is required.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in article 7 of the BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
- Lectures provide explanations of the basic principles, subject methodology, examples of problems and their solutions.
- Laboratory exercises support practical mastering of the themes presented in lectures. Active participation of students is required.
Participation in lectures is recommended. Participation in other ways of instruction is checked.
Course is taking advantage of e-learning (Moodle) system.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of study results follow the BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations and Dean's Regulation complementing the BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations. Up to 30 points can be obtained for completion of tasks in laboratory exercises. Up to 70 points are given for the final examination.

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with materials for electrical and electronic engineering, and basic passive and active electronic elements.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

It is obligatory to undergo all laboratory exercises in regular or alternative terms to complete the course. Other forms of checked instruction are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantor of the course and updated for every academic year.
