Music in New Media

Music and new media - a marriage of convenience? Technological compliance of music - music of machines. Digitality of music and music encoding (from Neum to MP3, possibilities of visual representation). Modularity of music (music as a kit, the impact of mobile technologies). Music as a hypertext (redefinition of terms author - artist - listener). Interactivity of music - changes in the interface (J. Cage, G. Levin, D. Long, T. Dvorak, et al..). Multimediality (music in the context of other media). Music and space - music (in) space / space in music. Aesthetics of music in new media (functional × absolute, authentic × eclectic, high × low). Works of art in the age of digital reproducibility. Mobility of music - metamorphosis of memory. Materialization of sound - music as a physical object.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will be able to:
- describe the technological conditionality of music, its digitality and modularity,
- define the concepts of interactivity and multimediality,
- discuss issues such as hypertext, music and space, etc.,
- express basic problems of aesthetics in music in new media,
- describe musical works of art in the age of digital reproducibility.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic concepts of musical acoustics, tempo, expression and dynamic signs, and musical instruments tuning is required as well as musical intervals, scales and modes, chords and basic harmonic connections, and timbres.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
- Lectures provide the explanation of basic principles, subject methodology, examples of problems and their solutions.
Participation at lectures is recommended.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of study results follows Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and Dean's Regulation to the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. The credit is awarded for a summary of 5 mandatory texts. Up to 50 points is given for writing an essay and another 50 points for final oral examination. The exam is aimed at knowledge in area of using music in new media according to syllabus of the subject.

2. Music as a hypertext (redefinition of the author - artist - student). Interactivity of music - changes in the interface (J. Cage, G. Levin, D. Long, T. Dvorak, et al.). Aesthetics of music in new media (functional × absolute, authentic × eclectic, high × low).
3. Multimediality (music in the context of other media). Music and space - music (in) space / space in music.
4. Mobility of music - metamorphosis of memory. Music as a media of isolation. Videocliping of the natural light.

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with music in new media and define the basic concepts of this issue.
