Methodology of Science and Research Work in Economics and Management

Course contents:
• Research in economics and management - research process, research project design. Research timing, pitfalls and research critical points. Determination of the state of scientific knowledge, full-text scientific database. Sources and data collection and processing in secondary research.
• Methods and approaches of quantitative research - sample determination, research questions and hypotheses determination, pre-research investigations, advanced quantitative data processing using SW tools.
• Methods and approaches of qualitative research - selection of methods, data capture, data processing (transcription techniques, data coding), interpretation and analysis of outputs using SW tools.
• Science and research funding - grant system (CR and abroad). Industrial law protection of inventions and commercialization. Evaluation of scientific results. Technology transfer. Ethics in scientific work, copyright.

The student will understand the basic principles of scientific work. They will be able to elaborate a research project for successful elaboration of a dissertation in the field of economics and management. He will also be able to process his research results into a scientific article for publishing at national and international level. They will also be able to prepare a research project for the Czech Grant Agency.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to perform secondary and primary research, which will be applicable in the final dissertation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

In addition to lectures, the course will also use individual and team work and case studies from real practice.
Selected lectures of Czech and foreign experts on advanced research methods will be included in the course.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

For successful completion of the course students must:
1. To write a written semestral work, (research project) (30 points).
2. Take an e-learning course for publication at the BUT library (20 points).
3. Take the course Fundamentals of Scientific Work at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (20 points)
4. Prepare a scientific article ready for publication in a scientific journal (10 points).
5. To pass an exam in the subject which is individual and written (20 points).
Total 100 points.
For successful completion of the course the student must complete all five parts of the assessment and must obtain min. 75 points.

1. The topic of the dissertation, the link between the research and the topic of the dissertation.
2. Research in economics and management - research process, research project design.
3. Research timing, pitfalls and critical points of research.
4. Determination of the state of scientific knowledge, full-text scientific database, literature search process.
5. Sources and data collection and processing in secondary research.
6. Methods of data collection and processing in primary research.
• Methods and approaches of quantitative research - determination of sample, research questions and hypotheses, pre-research investigations, advanced quantitative data processing using SW tools.
• Methods and approaches of qualitative research - selection of methods, data capture, data processing (transcription techniques, data coding), interpretation and analysis of outputs using SW tools.

Aims

The main course objective is to teach students how to work scientifically, thus preparing them for quality elaboration of their dissertations. Partial objectives are: to determine the status of scientific knowledge and to correctly use individual research methods.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Active participation of students will be checked. Students are obliged to attend an e-learning course for publishing and a course at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Students prepare a scientific article ready for publication.
