Life Cycles of Building Materials

FAST-NJB026Acad. year: 2020/2021

Introduction to the problems of lifetime of building materials, especially on models of constructions, which are exposed to very corrosive conditions. Formulation of basic notions in the area of lifetime building materials. Problems of protection of building materials against influences of external environment. Problems of lifetime prediction of building materials exposed to particular conditions.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student would manage the goal of the subject by acquiring knowledge on key modern materials, mainly on reinforced concrete, ceramic products, wooden structures etc., by acquiring information on the problems of degradation of these materials by acting of physico-mechanical actors (i.e. mainly by frost disturbance, effects of increased temperature, etc.) and physico-chemical factors (i.e. mainly by different types of chemically aggressive environments).

Prerequisites

The knowledge of general and physical chemistry. The basic knowledge in branch of physics in building engineering. The basic knowledge in silicate chemistry.

Course curriculum

1. Formulation of basic notion in the field of lifetime building materials (divided to physico-mechanical and physico-chemical influences).
2. Physilco-mechanical influences (effects of moisture, freeze, loading etc.).
3. Evaluation of particular sort of corrosive conditions and their influence on building materials (gaseous media).
4. Evaluation of particular sort of corrosive conditions and their influence on building materials (liquids).
5.–7. Mechanism of concrete deterioration and corrosion of reinforcement (corrosion of steel elements in concrete, genesis of cracks, peeling, calcareous and magnesium expansions, sulphate attack, etc.).
8. The basic principles of protection building materials.

Aims

Introduction to the problems of lifetime building constructions especially from the view of reasons of failure genesis and selection of suitable building materials. Lessons are focused on basic notions in area of lifetime and durability of building materials. There are mainly discussed the major building materials of nowadays (reinforced concrete, ceramics, wood constructions etc.). The problems with degradation of these materials by physical-mechanical and physical-chemical influences are described in details.
