English for PhD students

Following the standard structure, students compose and write an abstract of their work on the PhD dissertation in academic English and consult the language features with the language teacher.
Students present orally their work on the PhD dissertation in academic English and answer the questions. In the following discussion students describe their participation and experience at international conferences.

Skill in reading technical literature of his/her field of study, in writing and giving a paper.

Skill in carrying on a professional dialogue.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of English minimally at B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages, completed course Language Tutoring (DY02) where students study the terminology from a scientific publication which concerns their topic of PhD dissertation and submit the written assigments: English-Czech glossary and a summary of the selected publication and its relevance to the topic of student's dissertation.
To get the knowledge of academic English necessary for writing research papers and presenting it is recommended to attend the subjects Academic writing (BYA11) and Academic Skills (BYA12).

Course curriculum

To register for the exam, students will send email to their teacher of the subject Language Tutoring (DY02).
Students will elaborate an abstract of their current work on their PhD project, send it to the teacher and ask for consultation.
The exam date is arranged individually on agreement with the teacher.
The exam is oral and has the form of a presentation and discussion.
