The course is intended to teach English as a foreign language at general level. Also dealt with is ESP. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be made familiar with general vocabulary for the workplace, as well as grammar structures for everyday communication at intermediate level.

Prerequisites

Course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at the pre-intermediate level as minimum. They are expected to have the knowledge and skills corresponding to A2 level (CEFR).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Language instruction as an extension of basic professional curriculum.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit is awarded on condition of having attended the seminars actively, worked out assigned tasks and passed a credit test (at least 30 points out of 50). For the computer assisted part, students are required to collect 60% in the elearning activities and submit an individual written task. There is a possibility for the student to resit the test.

Aims

The aim of the course is to equip students for real-life tasks that arise in a wide range of technical occupations. It is intended to consolidate the knowledge obtained at secondary school and practice all four language skills.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is compulsory and is systematically checked by the teacher. Students are allowed to miss two language seminars and one seminar of computer assisted language learning. In well-founded cases, extra absences can be made up for after consulting the situation with the teacher.
