Materials Selection and Performance

FSI-WUVAcad. year: 2020/2021

Student will be introduced to the problems of material selection. Student will interact with the philosophy of material selection and difficulties with decision in material selection. Student will learn about different methods of material selection and he will also use them practically in practice lessons. During a subject, student will be confronted with the multiple goals strategies, estimation of cost, ecological problems etc. Practice lessons are held in the computer lab equipped with the world-wide used software CES EduPack created by M. Ashby.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student will be able to estimate the necessary material properties for the proper material selection.
Student will be acquainted about different material selection methods and will be able to select the proper one.
Student will be able to select proper technology for ensuring the right performance of given engineering part and will be able to estimate the price of this part.
Student will be able to work with the material database suitable for material selection.

Prerequisites

The course completes the studies of materials engineering and is built up on the knowledge obtained by students in this specialization. A prerequisite of taking this course is therefore a very good knowledge of materials sciences in particular context between materials, technology, performance and structure.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The subject is composed from lessons and practises.
Lessons have a form of frontal teaching about basic principles and theory.
The practises have a form of project teaching in the computer laboratory equipped with necessary software for material selection.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Course-unit credit requirements: active attendance at exercises and successful presentation of the semestral work.
Examination: Written part verifies theory and oral part verifies practice students knowledge.
