Course detail

Computer Modelling - Alias Design

FSI-YPAAcad. year: 2020/2021

Students will apply their previous knowledge of modeling in Rhinoceros 3D and extend it with CAS (computer aided styling). On the practical task they will learn methods of building high quality surface model corresponding to the requirements of the automotive industry.

The course has been upgraded with the support of the OPVK project. "The Studio digital sculpture and new media project", reg. No. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0278, is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the state budget of the Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will master the basic principles of work with the creation of surfaces with stylistic intent applicable especially in the automotive industry in the area of class A modeling. The acquired experience can be used in solving a diploma thesis or in contracts for the automotive industry.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of CAD systems (Rhinoceros 3D) and knowledge of classical or digital artwork.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is taught in the form of exercise that focuses on practical mastery of the subject matter. One or two tasks are processed during the semester. The key processes and solutions are demonstrated step by step during the course directly in the classroom with the individual work of each student. The teaching method is "learning by doing".

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Graded course-unit credit requirements: attendance in lessons, meeting assigned projects deadlines, practical test verifying the knowledge of work with the software and creative work ability.
Resulting evaluation consists of evaluations on projects, tasks and a test. In total it will be possible to aquire 100 points. Resulting classification will be defined by the ECTS scale.
If some of the projects and test are awarded less than half of the maximum pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed".
According to the article No. 13 of Study and Examination Rules of Brno University of Technology ECTS evaluation degree scale is used. . If some of the projects are awarded less than 50 pts., final evaluation of the course is "failed". The course is evaluated with the following grades: ECTS EVALUATION DEGREES / PTS. RATING / NUMERIC RATING: A / 100 - 90 / 1 / Excellent; B /89 - 80 / 1,5 / Very good; C / 79 - 70 / 2 / Good; D / 69 - 60 / Satisfactory; E / 59 - 50 / Sufficient; F / 49 - 0 / 4 / Failed.

Aims

Mastering the basics of CAS (computer aided styling), advanced surface modeling and basics of class-A modeling.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The attendance at seminars is obligatory and checked by the lecturer. Students have to be present in scheduled hours in the computer laboratory, work on given projects and wait for consultation, unless a lecturer gives other individual plan. The excuse of absence is possible only due serious reasons such as illness. Unexcused absence may jeopardise awarding the graded course-unit credit.

Syllabus

1. Introduction to modeling environment Autodesk Alias, philosophy of work, creation of new project, the layout of the main tools, files and objects, marking menu, stage, variant lister.
2. 2D elements - curves, their creation, the class of curves, tools span points, blend, align, transform CV, curvature analysis, creation of 2D graphics based on the underlying sketch.
3. Surfaces - creating surfaces from curves, draft tool, skin, transform CV surfaces, align surfaces, surface curvature analysis, highlight, checking the quality of the surface connection.
4. Surface topology - segmentation, how it is formed, trimmed and untrimmed surfaces, sharp model, simple blend transitions, radius, chord.
5. Typical segmentation - system of connection of trimmed and non-trimmed surfaces, transition from sharp model to model with blend transitions and radii.
6. Typical segmentation - examples of solutions: the overlapping radii, boot corner.
7. Typical segmentation - examples of solutions: Y overlapping surfaces, rotating canopy area.
8. - 12. Work on the assignment for complex practice of the the acquired skills. Students work individually on the modification or completion of specified data. These are e.g.: tank cap, rear lens cap washer, roof transitions into the front and rear window etc.
