Chemical-engineering Risks

Selected chapters from inorganic and organic chemistry and technology. Nuclear chemistry. Chemistry of hazardous substances. Chemistry of fires and explosions. Chemistry and technology used for environmental protection. Contamination of the environment. Foundations of chemical ecotoxicology. The fate of pollutants in the environment. Special aspects of decontamination and remediation during extensive technical emergencies. A basic overview of the construction of nuclear plants and the danger of accidents occurring there (Chernobyl, Fukushima).

Learning outcomes of the course unit

An overview of energy-producing and chemical plants in operation in our industrial sector. Basic processes in inorganic and organic technology, safety at work and the prevention of industrial accidents. Graduates will be able to work in the position of a foreman or operations engineer. They could also become a member of a company’s security team. The subject can also be of use in students’ subsequent studies.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching methods employed are appropriate to the type of tuition and are described in Article 7 of the Study and Examination Rules of BUT. The lessons include lectures and also feature audio-visual projections, including presentations of various teaching tools. Some chapters are also listed in LMS Moodle.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

A written test, if the evaluation is at least “sufficient”; an oral test is also possible. A supplementary written exam may also be given if needed in order to obtain a better assessment.

To provide knowledge regarding dangerous chemical substances, health and environmental protection and the operation of various technical plants. Work and fire regulations, methods of prevention and personal protective equipment.
