Course detail

Diagnostic of structures

ÚSI-RTDIKAcad. year: 2020/2021

The course focuses on the causes of technical risks associated with the continued operation of structures. Students will be familiarised with factors that can affect the quality and reliability of structures - repairs, maintenance, the decision to demolish. Introduction to the testing of structures (in a test room, in situ). The classes will be supplemented by practical demonstrations of testing, the design of a sampling plan and the assurance of its representativeness using simple tools for the qualification quantification of risks and danger - based on the assumption of minimizing systematic survey errors. Attention is paid to the most common mistakes contractors make, and their prevention. Overview of the ecological and aesthetic function of reconstruction and repair, and in particular the protection of completed works against negative environmental influences.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will gain specialized and professional knowledge and skills in the area of the destructive and non-destructive testing of materials. They will be able to employ diagnostic methods to detect material properties in various types of structures. Based on the acquired knowledge, students will be able to choose the optimal method for a given diagnostic task. They will learn to evaluate structural failures, and will obtain an overview of the properties of materials used in the past.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites: Goniometric functions, units of physical quantities and their conversion, the fundamental laws of physics, mechanics of bodies.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Tuition takes place via lectures and seminars. The lectures focus on the explanation of basic principles, the methods of the given discipline, problems and example solutions. The seminars mainly support practical mastery of the subject matter presented in lectures or assigned for individual study with the active participation of students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The study results are assessed via a written test, and also orally. The completion of the course is conditional on attendance at laboratory sessions, the submission of written reports and the defence of a group seminar paper on the topic: Proposal for a building survey.

Course curriculum

1. Introductory lecture, assessment of existing structures
2. The use of modern diagnostic methods in risk engineering
3. Diagnostic analysis of concrete structures - non-destructive methods
4. Diagnostic analysis of concrete structures - sampling and the evaluation of the properties of concrete
5. The radar method (GPR)
6. Reinforcement localization - electromagnetic indicators

Aims

The aim is to provide students with knowledge and practical experience regarding basic methods for the testing of building materials and structures, and thus to complement the practical apparatus for the quantification of structural faults and the state of structures.
