Prevention of Major Chemical Accidents

The main characteristics of major chemical accidents. Prevention of major chemical accidents as a safety system. Classification of structures (facilities) with hazardous chemical substances into basic groups A or B, and their characteristics. Analysis and risk evaluation of a major chemical accident. Safety programmes and safety reports. Internal and external accident plans. Liability insurance for damage caused. Establishment of an emergency planning zone and informing the public about its scope and safety measures. Evaluation of chemical accidents.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The increased knowledge and competence of students will demonstrate itself particularly in the following areas:
a) Students will understand mutual relationships within the prevention of major chemical accidents.
b) Students will be able to determine the classification of an object or device into group A or B based on their knowledge.
c) Students will be able to design methods of analysis and risk evaluation, and recommend suitable SW tools for use in dealing with the impacts of major chemical accidents.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of physical chemistry, organic, inorganic and environmental chemistry is required for the successful completion of the course. Another prerequisite for the successful completion of the course is a pre-intermediate level of computer literacy.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Tuition takes place in the form of lectures which focus on the explanation of basic principles, the methods of the given discipline, problems and example solutions.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The course is completed via a final consultation and an oral exam that tests the full scope of the materials corresponding to the given year of study.

Aims

The course aims at providing students with advanced information concerning the characteristics of chemical accidents, and the prevention of major chemical accidents, including analysis and risk evaluation, with a focus on organizational safety and technical safety measures in the area of chemical safety. Through lectures, students will gain advanced knowledge regarding the prevention of major chemical accidents in all major areas in accordance with the valid legislation.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at lectures is not compulsory, but it is recommended. Attendance at seminars is obligatory for students.
The results of the course of tuition are checked via a discussion forum during the lectures. This always takes place after the completion of a whole block of taught subject matter.
Consultation hours are provided for students.
